ADVENT WREATH

THE ADVENT WREATH

The Advent wreath is a circular garland of evergreen branches representing eternity. On that wreath, four or five candles are typically arranged. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

During the season of Advent, one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday as a part of the Advent services. Families or other small groups of people give devotional readings while lighting the candles on the Advent wreath, adding a meaningful dimension to worship. Many families repeat the tradition at home as a way of deepening and making spiritual preparations more intimate and personal.

FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

Throughout the first week of Advent, Christians reflect on the theme of hope and the idea that Christ's coming into the world brings hope to a world in need of salvation. It's a time for believers to meditate on the prophecies in the Bible, such as those in the book of Isaiah, that foretell the birth of the Messiah. The liturgical color associated with this week is typically purple or blue, symbolizing anticipation, penance, and preparation.

Making an Advent Wreath

Making an Advent Wreath

Creating your own Advent wreath can be a meaningful activity. You can use a circular base, fresh or artificial greens, and the appropriate candles. Here’s a simple guide:

  1. Gather Materials: You will need a circular base (like a floral ring), evergreen branches, and four candles (three purple, one pink) plus a white Christ candle for the center.
  2. Assemble the Wreath: Arrange the greens around the base and place the candles evenly spaced around the wreath.
  3. Decorate: You can add additional decorations like ribbons or ornaments to personalize your wreath. 1
The Advent wreath serves as a beautiful reminder of the Christian faith's central message during the holiday season, encouraging believers to reflect on the significance of Christ's coming into the world.
