Lent is a 40-day period leading up to Easter. It lasts from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, excluding Sundays. Sundays are an important part of Lent, but we do not include them in the “40 days” because on every Sunday we remember and celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. Lent is a time for reflection, self-examination, repentance, and deepening one's relationship with God. During this season of the church year, the focus generally shifts from Jesus’s public ministry to his final journey to Jerusalem. Lent prepares us for the Passion of Jesus (the story of his arrest, trial, suffering and crucifixion) and anticipates his resurrection.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is a day of repentance and a time to confess sins and profess devotion to God. Ashes are used on Ash Wednesday to symbolize mortality and repentance. The ashes are often made from burning the palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday service. Suggested Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:20 Ash Wednesday Service & Imposition of Ashes: 7pm
The Sunday before Easter is called "Palm Sunday.” The name comes from a story in the Bible in which Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem where crowds greeted him by waving palm branches. Prior to this event, Jesus and his friends roamed the countryside teaching and performing miracles, gaining recognition.
